About the Project
On June 24, 2021, Champlain Towers South, a 12-floor condominium in Surfside, Florida, partially collapsed at approximately 1:30 a.m. EDT(See here for more details). The collapse happened suddenly and has resulted in mass casualties. On June 25, NIST began deploying a team of six scientists and engineers to collect firsthand information on the collapse. Since then, NIST experts have been working with federal, state and local authorities to identify and preserve materials and information that might be helpful in understanding why the collapse occurred.
The Dr. Ferraro’s research group at the University of Florida has assisted in the forensic analysis of the concrete mixture design and recreation trial concrete mix designs which provide the basis for the structural testing performed at the University of Washington and the University of Minnesota.
Please take a look at the attached video for some of our contributions to the project. Dr. Hover specifically mentions our Role at approximately 10:45 in the video.
